Just some good harmless fun or just a bit disturbing?

       If you haven’t seen it already, check out  the David After Dentist video on Youtube.  It’s about a boy, little David DeVore, who is high from the effects of the medication given to him as a result of a trip (get the pun?!) from the dentist. When I first saw it, I laughed, but then I thought about it. Did David’s father do something wrong by putting a video of his high-as-a-kite child on Youtube for laughs? David’s dad, who is also named David (go figure! lol!) says that he wanted to film his son in order for the boy not to be so scared of the dentist appointments.  I honestly think that the video is funny. I mean, it’s not like his father is using the video for profit, at least hopefully. I would like to think that David’s father is not intentionally selling his son for profit, and that the video was just harmless fun. On the other hand, would the Youtube video be as interesting if it was a teenager or an adult who had been high from the dentist? Probably not so much. One cannot help but wonder if David’s dad put the video on the Internet on purpose to get some attention. I mean, these days, all the average joe has to do is to put an interesting Youtube video online, and all of a sudden, he is a superstar. 

Whether David’s father just put the video online for harmless laughs or for fame, it certainly garnered attention from all of the media outlets and the general public.  The David After Dentist video has been seen over 6 million times on Youtube after only being posted for a week.  As I said before, the video is funny to me, and to many other people, but to others, it may be a little disturbing for two reasons. Some argue that little David will be embarassed to see himself all over the Internet in this way when he gets older, but I think what also may disturb some is the depiction of a young child being high on anything, even if it’s for a standard dental procedure.  In my opinion, if it makes some people uncomfortable, then screw it and get a sense of humor, but what’s your take on the matter?

Is It Pathetic To…

Hey World,

       A question: Is it pathetic for someone to keep mementos of his or her ex, even though they have broken up a LOOONNG time ago? I’m pondering this after hearing that Jennifer Aniston keeps old voicemails from all of her ex-boyfriends, including her most notable ex, Brad Pitt. To some, she may just be a very sweet and sentimental gal, but to me, it’s just downright pathetic. I really hope that it isn’t true, but I have a sinking suspicion that it is (lol!) I mean, she seems like the type that would do such a thing. I mean, why can’t Jen just let go? It would be one thing to keep pictures, but voicemails? It’s a bit creepy in my book. I’d be interested to see what other people think. Any thoughts? Wonder what Angelina Jolie might think of that, if she cares at all. LOL!

Other Favorite Christmas Tunes

       I know that Christmas is almost over, but I couldn’t let the holiday go without giving an honorable mention to some of my other fave holiday tunes besides Wham’s “Last Christmas,” of course:

1. Happy X-Mas, War is Over by John Lennon-Great Song. It’s so good that one almost doesn’t mind Yoko Ono’s yelling in the chorus.

2. Little Drummer Boy by Bing Crosby and David Bowie-I liked how it was a duet between the old generation and the new, the straight-laced square American and the pop-rock Brit. Such an underrated tune. I didn’t hear this song as much as “Last Christmas” and others.

3. Have a very Merry Christmas”- by TLC-Love this early TLC song, and it really makes me miss Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes a lot and it makes me miss TLC as a whole too.

4.All I Want for Christmas is You”-by Mariah Carey-A fun, 60s-style song that I love to sing along to when it’s on the radio.

5.A Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney and Wings-Another fun sing-along song.

6. Step into Christmas-by Elton John-Always makes me happy to hear this song.

7. Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano-The song’s chorus makes everyone practice on their Spanish.

8.O Holy Night by Celine Dion-Listening to her version of this song always gives me chills. I love it.

9.Do They Know It’s Christmas by Band Aid-A “We Are the World” type of song, except it only featured pop & rock acts from the UK.  Still a classic.

My Favorite Christmas Song Ever!!!

           Happy Christmas Eve! I have been thinking of some of my favorite Xmas songs, but one sticks out in my mind as being my personal number one fave Christmas song-”Last Christmas” by Wham!  I can never get tired of the ’80s classic. I can listen to it on the hour every hour on the radio if I could. Hell, I love the song so much, I’ve been known to listen to it a few times when it wasn’t Christmas ( like July! lol!)

          It’s kind of difficult to describe how much I adore “Last Christmas.” I mean, to some, it may be some overly synthesized 1980s pop confection by a once famous musical duo, whose lead singer (George Michael) has moved so far away from that sqeaky-clean image that he once had. To me though, once I hear the opening music, as corny as it sounds, I feel all warm and tingly inside.  And say what you will about George Michael, but he is a great singer, which is a big reason why I like “Last Christmas” in the first place.

                      Another reason why I adore “Last Christmas” are the lyrics, which are very catchy and easy to remember. “Last Christmas I gave you my heart, but the very next day, you gave it away/this year, to save me from tears, I’ll give it to someone special. I like that the song isn’t the usual tra-la-la-de-da happy song, but at the same time, I’m glad it’s not a total downer like the lyrics of “Blue Christmas.” Ugh! “Last Christmas” is a redemption song of sorts. It’s starts off with G.Michael telling his old lover how she (Or he, considering what we all found out later about George Michael, lol!) took advantage of his love, but he’s not going to get down about it because he’ll give his love away to someone more deserving of it. It’s a song that’s turns a negative into a positive, so when u think about it it’s not really surprising cuz most ’80s pop songs were annoyingly happy-go-lucky and positive.  Lol!

               “Last Christmas” is such a popular Christmas song, many musical artists have made covers. I was recently listening to a radio program that had mentioned the website www.last-christmas.com. The site is chock full of covers of the song. When it comes to covers though, I really liked a cover of “Last Christmas” that Carrie Underwood had performed at an event last year, I believe, but I don’t know what to think about Ashley Tisdale’s version though. It’s sounds too pop and too fabricated. It sounds like Ashley is just singing it but not really putting emotion to the words like George M. did, in my opinion. The Australian band Savage Garden did a version of the song that wasn’t too bad though.

Anywho, everyone should enjoy “Last Christmas” while we still can cuz after Christmas Day, no more of the song until next year. Of course, there are probably other LC fans like myself who would listen to the song repeatedly no matter what time of year it is, but really, I’m hoping it’s not just me. Lol!

The Women of The View Dish on The N Word

    I was watching The View yesterday, and the ladies were discussing Jesse Jackson’s use of the N-word on Fox News, and all of a sudden, a big debate begun amongst the ladies as to when the word is and isn’t appropriate. Elisabeth Hasselbeck thinks that no one, regardless of color, should be using the word, while Sherri Shepard and Whoopi Goldberg thought that the word is ok to be used only among black people.

   As for my opinion, I agree with Elisabeth ( There was never a time when I thought that I would say those words, lol). I usually disagree with many of Elisabeth’s opinions, so I was surprised with how much I agreed with her and not with either Sherri or Whoopi, even though I am black. I don’t see how it is ok to use the n-word in any situation. I was actually kind of sickened when Sherri was trying to explain her logic as to why some black people use the word. I was annoyed when Barbara Walters kept on repeating that if she used the n-word she would get in trouble. Every time she said this, I kept thinking, “Why would you want to say it anyway?” It’s like she is dying to say it or something. I was also surprised when Barbara asked Sherri what she would do if she started saying the word, and Sherri said, “”I don’t want to hear it come out of your mouth.” I remember being shocked by that because Sherri said those words to Barbara, her boss by the way, in a serious tone that implied that she really would hurt Barbara if she said the n-word to her.

   What I didn’t like about the debate was that Whoopi was on Elisabeth’s case for being against the usage of the n-word. I felt that Whoopi did that because it was Elisabeth and also because she didn’t want Elisabeth to get the last word on it. I was really surprised when Elisabeth started crying because it came out of nowhere.  I would like to think that her crying was sincere, because if it wasn’t, then she wouldn’t be crying. I just kept thinking, “Why is this white woman crying about something that doesn’t have anything to do with her?” On further analysis, though, I’m realizing that more people should think like Elisabeth in the matter of the n-word. People-whether they are black, white, or green-should feel offended by the word and get angry and cry over its use. I hate how some people, particularly black people, justify its use, and by the way, neither Whoopi nor Sherri differentiated between using the n word with an -er or an -a ending, thank God, because to me, it really doesn’t matter how it is used. It shouldn’t be used at all.

Little Britain Is Coming to the US!

     An exciting tidbit of news for fans of the UK sketch comedy show, Little Britain. Yes, that’s right, it is coming to HBO, at least that is according to a blog from the New York Times.  It’s going to be called Little Britain USA, and it is also going to air on the BBC. The show is going to feature input from US stars like David Schwimmer from Friends, and Rosie O’Donnell.

      Gee, all I know is that I hope it doesn’t suck. What made the original LB so great were the quintissentially English characters like Vicky Pollard and Daffith, the Only Gay in the Village. I fear that the English humor of the show will not translate well into a US version. Also, America is so large. How are they going to create characters that audiences are going to identify with and relate to? Well, we will see what happens. It can go either way. LB USA could be an example of a  successful American translation of a British import like The Office, or it could sink to the ground like the American version of Coupling.  Let’s cross our fingers and hope for the best!
